The bulletin explained that the ornaments were an offering of hope, courage, and strength. A prayer was said that the words written on them would bring light, joy, and hope to the neighbourhood. On Easter Saturday, a number of people in the congregation, came and decorated the lilac tree that grows between the church door and the sidewalk. The Ostereierbaum (Easter Tree) idea was talked about for a few weeks during the Kid’s Corner (conversation with children during worship time). It was a chance for people to learn a unique piece of North American German tradition, and more importantly one way to share faith and light in the world.
Interestingly, there were decorations added by another church that meets in the hall; a couple of decorations were taken by those in an Anonymous group who found the words to be healing; and neighbours were seen standing under the tree reading God’s Word.
