On craft paper draw out a very large tree trunk, with various shades of brown maker or paint, add bark, knots; make it look real. Tape it on the wall with masking tape, as if it is growing out of the floor.
Take full sheets of green paper and cut out full sized leaves. Hand each person coming to worship a leaf (along with their bulletin - if you hand out bulletins). At the time of the prayers of the people, have an opening prayer, and then a period of silence. In the silence invite people to write their prayers on the leaf given to them. After five minutes pray a closing prayer. People are then invited to place their leaves in a basket on the way out of church. Following worship, have a couple of helpers (people not afraid of heights), tape the leaves onto the tree trunk.
For following weeks, continue to have a table with leaves and a basket beside the tree, so prayers can continually be added.
As the seasons change outside, consider other ideas for the tree. In the summer, add birds for specific blessings, flowers with names of those who have been a fragrance in your live, in the fall provide coloured leaves on which to write thanksgivings…fill the whole wall. See how prayers grow a beautiful living tree and community over the period of a year.
