THOSE UNWANTED OTHERS: PART ONE

6/8/2012

This week, in Ontario, the Roman Catholic school board has tried to fight provincial anti-bullying legislation that would allow every school to have GLTB student groups. They argue that this violates religious freedom. (It’s notable that the people actually working with the students – the teachers – have come out in support of the legislation.)

Now, I wouldn’t necessarily equate the RC board’s position to the video below – but any time we make a group the “those unwanted others” we are sitting in judgement. And what’s the message gay students in Roman Catholic schools (and their peers) are supposed to take away other than that one group of people are somehow less worthy in God’s eyes than another, that human beings have seen fit to judge.

This video is sickening – for the role it puts the children in, and for the rousing cheers from what appears to be a primarily male congregation in the pews. And while we can argue that there are different levels of discrimination and intolerance, in the end, if the message that these position send is the same – does a difference by degree really matter?
